6 Ways to Make Your House Xbox Kinect Ready

The Xbox Kinect is expected to be the next technological shift in video games and for good reason. For the first time ever, you can now use your entire body as a controller with no controllers in hand. This means all that jumping, kicking and movement that you do will be replicated on your tv screen. Since this is such a big change, here are six ways to make sure your house/apartment/place is ready for the Xbox Kinect:
Buy a carpet or exercise mat - Hardwood floors have become pretty popular over the past decade or so and because the Kinect requires so much jumping around, you'll want to pad your landings to avoid sore ankles. Buying a throw rug or carpet for the area where you'll be using the Kinect most will make playing it much more enjoyable. If you live in an apartment consider purchasing a thick exercise mat to avoid making too much noise and getting complaints from neighbors who live below you.
Remove coffee table - Back in the day coffee tables were must have staples in every living room. Today we don't spend nearly as much time sharing drinks with others in the living room as we do playing video games or watching tv so the value of a coffee table has lessened greatly. Find a spot to move your coffee table in advance or remove it from your room entirely to have enough space to jump, kick and dance as needed.
Unplug unneeded accessories - We're a society who loves electronics and electronics need power. If you don't have a second generation Xbox 360 with a Kinect-ready port built-in, you'll want to unplug items you're no longer using frequently so that you can power your Kinect. If you do have a second generation Xbox 360, the dedicated port will both power and connect your sensor to your system.
Replace light bulbs - Since the Kinect camera system works by tracking your skeleton system (think elbows, knees and joints), having a brightly lit room will greatly improve how well the camera can track your movement. Try CFL bulbs if you're seeking energy efficiency and brightness but be sure to go with a natural light style bulb to avoid having a living room with the brightness of an operating room.
Go big with your TV - Now that your body is the controller you'll be standing close to be in the action on tv. Larger tvs can offer a more immersive experience so consider upgrading to a larger tv that will really help put you in the game. Plasma TVs offer rich colors and dark blacks and are said to provide one of the best pictures for video games.
Clear away dangling ceiling fixtures - Not likely to be a big concern for most of us but if you have decorations or pendant lights be sure to relocate them if you're going to be using a Kinect in that area. Similar to how many new Wii owners first discovered how dangerous it can be to use a Wiimote near a window, you'll want clear space around you to prevent injuries.
