How to Buy Christmas Presents For Nerds?

Submitted By: Mike Neder

If you're not much of a tech enthusiast yourself, this part of your Christmas shopping could be a little intimidating. Particularly if the nerd we are speaking about is someone special in your life, and it is very important than he receives a nice surprise. You know you can't go for a bottle of cologne or a sweater - they'd probably feel just like you would if you got a pair of socks for Christmas. You might have a somewhat vague idea that you could get a gadget or something. But how can you decide what to choose? What if it's outdated, or they already have it, or it's made by a company they despise?

First of all, here are some tips about gift shopping in general. If you want to make it special, you should get outside of your regular mindset. Try to put yourself in his shoes. Write down everything you know about what he enjoys: any particular hobbies, technology companies that he likes and dislikes, what he is working on, gadgets that he has, computer games that he has, movies he has a special interest in... and basically everything that you can think of about his possessions and interests. Pay increased attention of the things that he already has - you wouldn't want to go buying the exact same stuff. Also, listen to him when he's talking about tech things for a few weeks, even if you are not interested - they are a good source of information.

The list might have helped you narrow things down a bit, but how do you go about actually selecting the exact item? If you decide to buy a PC game, for instance, how do you go about choosing one if you don't play computer games yourself? One thing you can do is to try reading online reviews about the latest releases. But then people have diverse tastes - even if you get a new, very popular one, how do you know he will like it? A more solution is to talk to one of his friends if you can. If not, maybe you have a friend who plays computer games and can help you out.

Geeky toys might be a good idea - they are fun to have and not precisely something you would go buy for yourself. Your choice here is very wide - from walkie bits to small finger drums. It's all about how much thought and imagination you put into it. In the same direction, collectibles make an inspired present for someone who is very passionate about a specific movie or book.

If it's a geek who also enjoys to dress up and look respectable, you could pick a designer notebook bag. Of course, he already has one, but perhaps it is just an ordinary bag. The advantage here is that you don't need a lot of technical expertise to select a great model. You only have to know his laptop dimensions.

Books are an often forgotten present idea. Nonetheless, it's something you can't go wrong with if you choose carefully. You can either choose a novel or a specialty book. If he is into fantasy, for instance, you can choose a good fantasy book. Even if you don't read them, there are lots of reviews available online. A specialty book is good if he just began learning some new programming language and is very passionate about it.

Finally, geeky T-shirts (that those with Pi-day or the caffeine molecule) are generally a safe choice. Also, if he is very enthusiastic about a new gadget that he got, you may always buy some accessories for that. Speaking of gadgets - if you want to buy that, make sure you pick the latest version of anything. Having the latest updates of everything is part of what makes you a geek.

Now a lot of the ideas you might have can be on the higher-end price segment. The good news is that you are always able to find discounts if you know where to look. United Tech Store is the one-stop-shop for all geeky things. You can find anything here, from books to the coolest Xbox 360 accessories. This is not an online shop, but a comparison shopping engine focused on technology. This means it brings together products from several online stores, so that you get the best deals for the things you want to buy. You may also use it as a source of inspiration if you are still undecided - it has many product reviews, a tech news section, and a blog section focused on technology.

Olympus E-5 Pro DSLR Camera Preview

Submitted By: Mark Hayward

On the eve of the digital photography festival Photokina at Colyone, Germany Olympus have announced there new edition to there professional DSLR camera the Olympus E-5 DSLR camera and here is our preview of the camera that is on general release on October 2010 replacing its three year old predecessor the E-3 with this new model the company refreshed its flagship product with professional photographers love of olympus pro range cameras.

Olympus’ new D-SLR flagship is tough as they come

It was the 14th of september 2010 in CENTER VALLEY,Pa. That olympus announced the E-5 a new dslr camera that has built on olympus tradition to meet the needs and demands of the professional photographer and experienced amateurs. The E-5 built to meet the demands of more upto date DSLR as said upgrades from the E-3 of about 3 years ago and 3 years before that the E-1 with this model being olympus flagship cameras olympus are determined to not loose there way to meet there professional users needs olympus have It is perhaps indicative of where Olympus's priorities lie - or the way the market is headed - that whereas the E-3 took the E-1 back to the drawing board and introduced several new features, the E-5 is probably best described as a warm over of its predecessor. It's also interesting to note that it benefits from a 'trickle up' of technology from the latest developments in the company's Micro Four Thirds cameras - a situation unusual for what is, effectively, the hero product in the E-system range.

Let's have a look at the main changes:

* New sensor (12MP vs 10MP Live MOS)
* New TruPic V+ processor (E-3 was TruPic III)
* Large 3.0" 921k vari-angle screen
* Fast Sensor AF (inc Face Detection)
* 720p movie mode (AVI M-JPEG) + Audio recording
* HDMI and Stereo Mic connections
* Art Filters (10, including new Dramatic Tone Filter)
* ISO 6400 top sensitivity (vs E-3's ISO 3200)
* More customization options
* Redesigned color-coded menu system
* New features including Level Gauge in the viewfinder, Multi-exposure, i-Enhance, 7 frame AEB
* SD / CF slots (E-3 was xD / CF)

The thing Olympus is really pushing with the E-5 is image quality. It's not a new sensor (from what we can tell this is almost certainly the same as the one in the E-PL1), but it does sport a redesigned (for which read lighter) Low Pass Filter (with moiré removed by the processor) and a new 'professionally tuned' Image Engine (The TruPic V+). The combination of Zuiko Digital lens, the new sensor and the new processor is claimed to offer image quality better than any 12MP APS-C camera, and, according to Olympus, many with even higher pixel counts.

With Olympus committed to high quality images they have designed the best cutting edge technologies to deliver the highest image quality in the Olympus range.Together with its 12.3 Megapixel High-speed Live MOS image sensor, the cameras processor the olympus TruePic V+ image processor generates clear colourful photos by processing every pixel individualy were as in the past groups of pixels were processed at a time to save on memory and process time in older cameras, this way of a sophisticated olgorithm delivers all information from each pixel this notes accurate colour in great detail and better photos than from other cameras of the same amount of mega pixels.The image processor is noted for accurate natural color, true-to-life flesh tones, brilliant blue skies and precise tonal expression; it also lowers image noise in photos shot at higher ISO settings (ISO 100 to ISO 6400), enabling great results in low-light situations.

Camera shake is one of the most problems cameras have to deal with through no fault of there own but we humans are not perfect so Olympus and the E-5 camera have to deal with this problem that make cameras blur when shaking so the E-5 has been fitted in body a mechanical image stabilizor that compensates this movement up to 5 steps EV and produces no image blur with any of the ZUIKO digital lenses available for the camera. Built in stabilization work with not only long focal lenses, but with wide, ultra-wide and fisheye lenses, there are consessions with this as long as your not using long exposure during low-light and night exposers.

Head turning High Definition Video
Shooting video is as easy as ever with the new Olympus E-5 camera. The camera captures all the action in crisp 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. With more than 20 Four Thirds® lenses, people can shoot video with a selection of lenses ranging from an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens to a super telephoto lens for a variety of expressive options. Photographers can capture great stereo sound quality by plugging any microphone with a standard 3.5mm jack into the camera’s stereo microphone terminal. A built-in microphone also records clear monaural audio.

The Advantages of Photoacoustics Technology

Submitted By: Adriana Notto

To choose a form of cancer treatment for a patient it is very important to know just exactly which stage the caner is in. Once a cancer has spread to the lymph nodes it is more dangerous and requires treatment to be much more aggressive; although, once it has spread there it's also much more difficult to determine where it is in the lymph nodes. This is where the use of Photoacoustics technology would be very beneficial.
This type of technology may make it a much more sure and efficient process when looking for caner in these hidden places. The Photoacoustics, which is a laser induced type of ultrasound, may be just the thing to make it easier to pinpoint the exact location of cancer cells in the hard to find lymph nodes.
Doctors hope that with the help if this technology they can more accurately determine what stages cancer like melanoma may be in, in each particular patient. Before this type of technology it was very difficult to determine what part of the lymph nodes the cancer had spread to because examining the entire lymph node is a time consuming and difficult process.
Eliminating the need to examine the entire node and simply find where the cancer is quickly would be a huge time saver and could be the determining factor in how quickly a patient recovers. Getting to the actual treatment faster would be great for everyone involved. If the stages can be more accurately identified then the treatments can happen faster, which will be a great benefit to treating the patient and getting them to recovery faster.
This method is being studied to see how much it will benefit people with melanoma cancer and to what extent it will cut down the guess work and time involved in figuring out what stages this type of cancer is in in a particular patient. Everyone with this type of cancer should be concerned with how well this new method may work because it could save them a lot of hassle and misery in the stage determining process, and help expedite treatment.
This method is not only supposed to be quicker abut it is also said to be a simpler method as well. Studies have been done with human cancer cells placed in the lymph nodes of animals, but they must be studies in human ones before this method can be determined as safe and useful in humans. Although, when used on the animal nodes with human cancer cells it was proven quite effective.
This technology uses lasers to scan the biopsy taken and then determines which parts of the biopsied areas contain the cancer cells. It acts on cells by heating and cooling them to cause them to make sounds that can then be measured to help find out what stage the cancer is in.
This new technology is being extensively studied to see if it will be as helpful as predicted in the cancer finding and treating process. Anything that makes it faster and easier to find cancer cells and get a patient on the path to recovery is well worth exploring to the fullest extent.

What the Network Cable is and Its Uses

Submitted By: John Schofield

In this computer age where many people have access to computes, more people now pass on information using the computer connected to the Internet. One computer’s information can get easily transferred to the other one using the Internet. Devices related to the computer such as the scanner, mouse, and printer are connected to one another physically through the use of network cables.
The network cable is essentially used to connect computer resources such as the mentioned devices above in order to form a network that would make information sharing easier. A network usually uses lots of network cables for data transmission. These cables are responsible for the sharing of messages from one computer to another or from sender to recipient. However, these cables can also be used on different computers in a network so that they can share devices such as scanners and printers. With the help of the cable, these personal computers can be used simultaneously. Even if most networks of computers already use wireless networks, they still need to use the network cable to connect all the components that make the network function.
These network cables are wires that are usually gray, tan or blue. You would see them lying around your computer at home and those at the office. At the tip of the wires, you would see translucent plastic where the internal wires are further protected by copper connectors. The connectors would be inserted into an input port hole in the computer. These cables are most useful in helping a computer network go operative. The computer can be easily connected to the Internet with the use of these cables. Once the computer is connected to the modem, that computer would then come alive and buzzing with the life brought by the Internet.
There are different types of network cables that you can choose from. One of the first considerations that you have to pay attention to when choosing the right cable is the type of network that you would like to have. Other considerations would follow such as the network’s size, topology, and protocol. The more devices are needed in a network to make it work effectively, the quicker the performance of the network cables should be. Thus, a more complex network of computers would need high quality cables. These are the types of cables that you need to look into.
• Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables. These are the usual cables that you will see used in many computer networks. These are preferred by users of networks that would need the speed of up to 100 mbps during data transmission.
• Fibre optic cables. These are cables with centre glass core that are covered by insulating materials to keep them protected. These cables are different from the traditional cables because the transmit data using light or electronic signals. Moreover, they can transmit data to places farther away than those distances reached by the other types of network cables.
• Coaxial cables. They are characterised by using only a single conductor used all throughout the length of the cables. To keep the metal shield from reacting with the centre of the conductor, a plastic layer is also inserted into the cables.

Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition and What Happened to the Unlock Codes

Submitted By: Adriana Noton

Adobe has long been known as a star in the digital image editing world and the Adobe Photoshop Album Starter was excellent for editing sharing and organizing image files for windows users. Although, a Mac version was planned it never materialized. This software contained the basic tools which would permit an amateur photographer to share their treasured memories and organize them in a useful fashion as well as basic correction features such as red eye correction. As good as this image editing program was, it has been discontinued by Adobe and is no longer supported.
This image editing software made photo correction the matter of only a couple of clicks. Slide shows could even include captions and emailing photos was made super simple with the Photoshop Album Starter. While this software is basic it meets the needs of most amateur digital photographers.
The download for this technically excellent Adobe software is still available and is still free. However Adobe has discontinued support for this free image editing program. If downloading version 3.0 save the file in a location you can find and unzip it. The adobe program will self install in a default location under program files if you choose that option. The download is a little over 6 MB and the system requirements are minimal in light of today's computer capabilities.
When the program is started it will scan your images in the selected locations and make thumbnails. These can be used to organize or decide upon the images that you wish to edit. Images can be browsed with tags, captions added or can be moved or edited as desired. The program makes browsing and arranging photos much simpler for the average amateur photographer.
After 25 uses the program will prompt the user to register for an unlock code to continue using it. Registration is a simple matter of filling in some basic information such as name and email address and country. According to the directions an email with the code to unlock the software will be mailed. This is how it worked until May of 2009, however once it was discontinued the unlock codes for the software are no longer available.
Instead of a registration code to continue using the program, the user will receive an email apologizing and explaining that the deadline for registration has passed. The email will not unlock the software but instead suggests another Adobe site where images may be edited. This has caused some confusion as users expect to see a registration code after filling in the information required.
Adobe remains a stellar name in digital image manipulation and editing. The Album software although limited in the number of times it can be used is still an exceptionally useful program and of the quality photographers have come to expect from this company. The album starter edition was released as a preview of what consumers could expect from Adobe Elements.
On the bright side no images are moved or lost by this Adobe software once it becomes locked and unusable, and for 25 uses it performs flawlessly. If this software was downloaded and installed on a computer after May 2009 uninstalling it afterwards is a simple matter and no photos will be lost in the process. The album starter edition although still free to use for a limited time is not a software package that will be available for long term use and another alternative should be selected.

The Future of Business Intelligence: Innovations in Location Intelligence

Submitted By: Adriana Noton

In the coming years, many business analysts are predicting that Business Intelligence (BI) will play a central role in the success of a multitude of different types of businesses. This is due to the fact that more businesses are recognizing the benefits of spatial data analysis in making smarter business decisions. Employing business intelligence solutions provides such benefits as: identifying the location of targeted customers, understanding customers better, reaching targeted customers, optimizing business operations, managing revenue more efficiently, minimizing risks, and forecasting potential problems. Because of changing consumer lifestyles that now includes incorporating technology in their daily lives, the future and innovation of location intelligence is expected to focus on such technological innovations as the internet and mobile technology such as iphones. The result of utilizing location intelligence solutions in a world where technology is now a part of nearly everybody’s life is greatly improved business performance.
Businesses use location intelligence solutions to gather, organize, and analyze consumer data through the use of geographic patterns and relationships. Because consumer trends are shifting to using such technology as the internet, iPhones…etc, on a daily basis, business intelligence teams must now harness the opportunities this technology has created in order to improve their marketing strategies and reach their targeted market. In addition, the changing economic environment has resulted in diminished marketing budgets which have made the development effective and successful marketing strategies even more vital.
Today the internet has created a world wide market that does not have any geographical boundaries. For instance, it has been estimated that 1 billion people will access social networks by the year 2014 and most of the users will use a location based application. Businesses now have the ability to communicate directly with their targeted customers and meet their demands in order to gain a competitive edge. As well, marketers will be better able to identify current consumer trends and forecast future trends. It will also help them create and implement more effective business strategies that have a better chance of achieving success. A business will be able to better understand customer behavior, recognize and take advantage of unexpected opportunities, and predict problems before they occur.
Social computing, cloud computing, and mobile computing, are now a part of most people’s daily lives. Future innovations in location intelligence will allow companies to harness these technologies to develop effective strategies to reach their customers. For instance, taking advantage of consumer driven technological applications will involve incorporating such areas as marketing, product promotion, customer loyalty, point of purchase…etc., into these applications. As well, using Real-Time Business Intelligence to gain instant information will become essential to achieving success.
Because of the emergence of huge spatial data sources such as Google maps, more consumers are adopting location based applications such as iPhone Apps, businesses must now engage in innovative thinking to capitalize on the data. In the future, technological advancements will result in business intelligence undergoing a fundamental shift that will revolutionize the way business decisions are made. Businesses who do not embrace this shift will definitely be at a serious disadvantage when trying to succeed in such an intensely competitive world.

Club DJ 101: A Guide to DJ Equipments for the Novices

Submitted By: Johnathan Cunnings

Club partying is fun, until it dawns on you that you want to tinker with the DJ equipments in the booth and spin the music yourself. This isn't uncommon these days as most of those who join the party crowd are increasingly being drawn to the thrill of deejaying. Everyone wants to try making people dance to the tune of their own remixes that they keep playing on their heads for quite sometime. Still, the excitement that comes with deejaying isn't limited to making party-goers dance 'til they drop; it is also due to the fact that becoming a club DJ is actually a financially rewarding job.
There's always the starting phase in every job, and deejaying is no exception. Anyone who wants to pursue a dream of becoming a club DJ must first be knowledgeable of the basic deejaying techniques. One doesn't become a DJ overnight, so he really has to keep on practicing. And since studio rates are getting expensive nowadays, it's best to practice with your own DJ equipments instead of renting them for several bucks per hour. But which equipment does one buy in order to get started?
The list below enumerates the basic equipments used in club deejaying which the novices will need to practice using. While the cost of acquiring the following DJ equipments might give you some time to think over, you must understand that you can cover the expenses sooner upon assuming a rightful place in a club as a resident DJ. Think of these devices as your ticket to your dream of becoming a famous disc jockey in town.
* Turntables - You've probably heard of the term or seen this item during live performances in the clubs. Basically, this is where the DJs perform all the scratching, pitch altering and looping in their music. It can be the conventional stand-alone unit or the more sophisticated turntable-mixer combo.
* Mixer - Next in the line of priority DJ equipments is the mixer. As the term suggests, it allows for the mixing of two music sources through a series of executable techniques that are native to the unit such as the crossfader.
* Audio Device - Since you're dealing with sounds, you'll need a good audio device to get the feel of the job. It doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. As long as it delivers good sound output, you'll do fine with a single bookshelf speaker for your beginner setup.
* Headphones - Either you've seen it cradled on the DJ's neck or held in one hand while the DJ is scratching the vinyl with the other. Headphones are essential to DJs for individual listening as another track is being played on loudspeakers.
* Sequencer - It helps map out MIDI-compliant tracks for mixing with the digital audio files. This is quite advanced in nature, though most DJs recommend getting a head start on it.
* Sound Recordings - What deejaying would be like without these music sources? After you've bought all the necessary DJ equipments, you'll going to need these stuffs for practicing your chops and mixing skills.
